Tuesday 17 April 2012 ? 0 Bearism ?

Changes in both the levels of funding and the profiles of students have led to an increasing emphasis on the use of flexible methods of course delivery in higher education and as part of that trend there is increasing interest in the use of communication and information technologies (ICT). Here are some example of collaborative tools in e-learning:

1)Online Forum
2)Wikis
3)Podcasting
4)Second Life

ONLINE FORUM

  • An Online Forum , is an online discussion site where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages.
  • Online Forums offer focused content on a wide array of current topics, presented by professionally coached and engaging speakers.
  • They differ from chat rooms in that messages are at least temporarily archived. Also, depending on the access level of a user or the forum set-up, a posted message might need to be approved by a moderator before it becomes visible.
  • Depending on the forum's settings, users can be anonymous or have to register with the forum and then subsequently log in in order to post messages. On most forums, users do not have to log in to read existing messages.
Things you need to know about Online Forum
  • User Group
-An unregistered user of the site is commonly known as a guest or visitor.

-Privileges and rights are given based on user groups. The privileged is set by the administrator.

  •  Moderator
-The moderators  are users of the forum who are granted access to the
posts and threads of all members for the purpose of moderating
discussion and also keeping the forum clean.
        - They have access to all posts and threads.

  • Administrator
-The administrators manage the technical details required for running the
       site.
-Promote members to moderators, manage the rules, create sections and
sub-sections, as well as perform any database operations.
  • Post
-A post is a user submitted message enclosed into a block containing the
user's details and the date and time it was submitted.
-Members are usually allowed to edit or delete their own posts.

  • Thread

  • In an educational context, instructors might create guided audio tours for field trips, or perhaps commentary or instructions for an internship or residency. Conversely, students can create podcasts to report their observations or conduct interviews.
  • In an education field, Podcasting could be used for:
       - news/updates
       - guest lectures
       - student presentations
       - student-produced podcasts
       - interviews with guest experts
       - tours/fieldwork
       - internships/residencies
       - feedback/evaluation of student work

  • Second Life is used as a platform for education by many institutions, such as colleges, universities, libraries and government entities.

LEARNING AND COMMUNICATING

Communication skills are some of the most important skills that you need to master. Communication, therefore, is a process that involves at least two people – a sender and a receiver. For it to be successful, the receiver must understand the message in the way that the sender intended. This sounds quite simple. But have you ever been in a situation where this hasn't happened? Misunderstanding and confusion often occur, and they can cause enormous problems. If you want to be an expert communicator, you need to be effective at all points in the communication process, and you must be comfortable with the different channels of communication. When you communicate well, you can be very successful. One of the most popular channel nowadays is internet.

NETWORK LEARNING

Network learning can be defined as a process of developing and maintaining connections with people and information, and communicating in such a way so as to support one another learning.
Network learning can be practiced in both informal and formal educational settings. In formal settings the learning achieved through networked communication is formally facilitated, assessed and/or recognized by an educational organization. In an informal setting, individuals maintain a learning network for their own interests, for learning "on-the-job", or for research purposes.
